Orange Zone

Conservation Projects at ZSL London Zoo

ZSL London Zoo is unique because it truly values flora and fauna. The zoo regularly undertakes conservation projects to protect endangered tree and animal species. Currently, ZSL is spearheading over 50 conservation projects worldwide.

Take the maidenhair tree (Ginkgo biloba), for instance. It has been on the planet since before the dinosaurs, yet it ranks number one on the latest EDGE of Existence list.

Scientists at ZSL joined hands with those at the Royal Botanic Gardens to study the status of similar rare plants and find a way to protect them.

The London HogWatch project is also part of ZSL's vision. The project, which monitors and conserves London's hedgehog population, found a critically endangered pine marten (Martes martes) in September 2022. It was the first time the species was sighted in London in the last century.

Feed The Penguins

At the Penguin Beach deck, you can feed the Hamboult Penguins inside the ZSL London Zoo. Watch these extremely friendly birds take a swim and get a chance to feed them during lunch. For just £10, get up and close with the penguins and learn about their daily life at the zoo straight from the zookeepers. You can feed the penguins corn, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, and fish. The zoo will provide them. This experience is completely wheelchair accessible, is only for ages three and above and is not included in the admission tickets.

Friendly Spider Programme

If you have arachnophobia or a fear of spiders, you should participate in the friendly spider programme. You can overcome the fear through zookeepers and hypnotherapists and learn how spiders are friendly creatures. ZSL London Zoo has a collection of British and Mexican spiders that you will be taken through as a part of the experience. Get over the irrational fear of spiders with this experience. You can bring someone for support during the session without paying anything extra. The experience is separate from admission tickets. The price is £150 with 30% off for students, seniors and children under 16 years of age.

Want to experience a night stay at the ZSL London Zoo? Book a lodge and get a private tour of the zoo. Junior Keeper For A Day

This experience is for children who love wildlife and want to spend time learning about the different animals in the zoo. For a day, they get to be zookeepers and care for the animals, just like the experts who do it daily. The experience includes feeding the animals and looking after them. The children who wish to be junior keepers for a day must be between 11 to 15 years of age. The adult accompanying them must be present within the zoo premises. For just £150, children can experience getting close to nature as much as possible.

Meet Our Meerkats

Meerkats are a joy to watch in their natural habitat. For just £54, you can meet the meerkats at the ZSL London Zoo and feed them for 20 minutes. With this experience, you get to learn interesting facts about the meerkats, their daily life, and their diet and get answers to any questions you may have about these animals. Only four visitors are allowed at once, giving you enough opportunity to interact with the meerkats. Children must be above five years to participate in this experience.

This experience takes you through the ocean using sounds, textures and sights. Made in a story format, take your toddlers and learn more about marine animals and their life in these weekly sessions. The experience is recommended for babies between 0-8 months and is organised every Tuesday at 10:30 AM. One parent can accompany the toddlers to guide them through various exhibits. The price for this experience is £10 per child with free admission to parents or guardians.

The Giraffe Keeper Experience

All your questions about giraffes will be answered by zookeepers who look after these majestic animals daily. And not just that, you get to be a giraffe keeper for a day too! Conducted in groups of four, the Giraffe Keeper Experience lets you interact with giraffes, feed them their favourite treats and watch them in their natural habitat. Children should be above eight years old to participate in this experience. People with reduced mobility should be accompanied by an adult, as this experience is not completely wheelchair accessible.

Meet The Penguins

Spend 20 minutes with Hamboult penguins at the Penguin Beach inside ZSL London Zoo. Watch them swim, eat and playfully interact with each other. You can also take pictures with the penguins and take them home as souvenirs. This experience does not include feeding the penguins, and children must be above eight years of age to participate in the activity. The experience is organised daily between 12:00 PM and 2:30 PM from April to October. Entry to Meet The Penguins costs £54 for a single person.
